Did you know you are taking the first step to join a community of thousands of student tutors serving in K-5 schools across the nation? That's right! America Counts and Reads is a federally funded tutoring program through the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center at Central Michigan University. We recruit, hire and train CMU students to serve as paid reading and math tutors in elementary school classrooms in the Mt. Pleasant community. Tutors work alongside teachers to help grade school students who have been identified as needing a little extra help with literacy and numeracy. Tutoring takes place in person during the classroom’s regular reading/math time. What tutors do varies from classroom to classroom, but generally: for math, tutors act as a general classroom assistant, answering questions as needed and leading small group activities. All tutors must go through training and complete a successful background check and confidentiality (FERPA) form before interacting with students. Prospective tutors are expected to offer at least 1 hour of availability during regular public school hours (8am - 3pm) and should be prepared to work up to 4 hours per week, although this may vary. It is key that potential tutors have a relatively open Friday schedule. Since tutoring positions through ACR are paid positions, both professionalism and reliability from the tutors are required.
If you are not work-study eligible, call the office of Financial Aid & Scholarships (989-774-3674) or Student Employment Services (989-774-3881) to see what you can do to become work-study eligible.
